Today, October 5th, is the anniversary of the crash, in 1930, of the British rigid airship R101, the so-called “Socialist Airship”, which smashed into a hillside near Beauvais France, killing 48 of the 54 people on board. The disaster effectively ended the UK’s efforts with rigid airships.

A personal fave, Britain’s R-80… the original streamlined airship- check out the Millennium Falconesque control car- probably why I liked it so much as a kid.
Interesting sidenote- British aircraft wiring was not colour-coded until it was first used on the R80. Must’ve been fun to be an aircraft electrician before that…
